Hooded Lugs

In the hallowed halls of horology, where time is measured in legacy, there exists a pantheon of ghosts. These are the watches that transcend function to become myth, whispered about but rarely seen. And amongst them, this Patek Philippe is king.
Produced only in 1938, this is the only black dial Ref 555 known to exist. The rarity is further enhanced by the unusual case design with bold cylindrical hooded lugs. The accompanying original Extract from the Archives reads more like a sacred scroll than a birth certificate.
To understand it, one must first understand the world that created it. The 1930s were an era when shaped or "forma" watches began their ascent. Spurred by the relentless creativity of Cartier, the watch world was no longer satisfied with the conventional. Rectangles, tonneaus and eccentric geometries became canvases and Patek Philippe, never content to just follow a trend, responded and delivered!

Despite its age, the quality here is unmatched. Hallmarks remain sharp, untouched by a polishing wheel, the case is perfect, the dial unsullied save for the faintest specks of age.
For nearly ninety years it has resisted erosion. This is Patek Philippe distilled: a refusal to compromise, an insistence on creating objects that will not simply last a lifetime but will outlast lifetimes.
For over a decade, the world's greatest collector guarded this watch, refusing to let it leave his possession. To procure it required an offer that bordered on the irresistible, a transaction that felt less like a sale and more like a passing of the torch.
Watches like this are not owned; they are stewarded, cherished in one lifetime before being entrusted to another.
