Among Vacheron’s many obsessions, none was more apparent than their fascination with the lug, that small and often overlooked bridge between art and anatomy, watch and wrist.

While most maisons from the 1930s thought of lugs as mechanical necessities, Vacheron treated them as punctuation marks in a love letter to form.

It was during the end of the Art Deco period that Vacheron first unveiled the teardrop lug; descending delicately at each corner to soften the geometric austerity of the watch case. The effect was both daring and melancholic; these lugs poured emotion into otherwise rational silhouettes and influenced the maison’s future designs.

Before the standard round models adopted these sensual forms, the earliest examples were actually tank-shaped releases from the 1920s and late 1930s: all quiet revolutions in design poetry.

Imagine, then, a rare survivor from this era: a late 1930s or early 1940s Vacheron in 18k yellow gold.

Vacheron Constantin has always been more than a watchmaker; it is a guardian of continuity. To hold one of these early teardrop pieces is to cradle an artifact of philosophy; the idea that time, though fleeting, deserves to be framed beautifully.
