There is a unique kind of beauty in a salmon dial; warm and faintly decadent. In vintage horology, such warmth is never merely cosmetic. It’s a signal: that someone, somewhere, made an aesthetic decision with their heart instead of their spreadsheet.

Guilloché salmon, especially, is where the colour invites you in; the engine-turned texture trapping the light in fine grooves. A great salmon dial feels alive because it is alive, constantly changing, refusing to sit still on the wrist. You can’t “understand” a dial like this from a photograph. You have to live with it. It has moods.

This is why the Daniel Roth S247 chronograph in 18k white gold, lands with such force. It comes from the second period, after The Hour Glass group acquired the brand in 1995: a chapter some dismiss too quickly. Yet the watch itself makes a convincing argument for reconsideration.

Let’s also be frank: the market has finally developed an appetite. Pre-1994 first-generation Roths have more than tripled in two years, and suddenly everyone is rediscovering what they once called “niche”. Hodinkee’s latest Talking Watches episode put a steel S247 with a salmon dial on camera, and the messages just started flying.

Steel pieces were the norm for the s247. White gold is the exception with less than 5% of production. Add the papers, and you’re no longer hunting: you’ve found a unicorn. The only remaining question is whether you want to read about it tomorrow, from someone else’s wrist.
