Born in 1922 amidst the jazz age and champagne, the Cloche de Cartier was shaped like a bell (“cloche” being the French word for one) and chimed not through its sound but through its form.

Decades later, the Cloche would slip in and out of production; glimpsed, coveted, then gone, with only a handful of editions gracing Cartier’s catalogue. Perhaps this rarity is part of its allure; it was never meant to be commonplace.

This 1996 Paris limited edition of just 200 pieces remains, to purists, the most faithful echo of the original; delicate curves, a guilloché dial with typography as elegant as a handwritten note, and none of the cold, straight lines that have crept into modern interpretations.

The Cloche’s “complication”, if we can call it that, is that it can stand on its side, revealing a secret identity as a miniature table clock; a timepiece that refuses to choose between wrist and desk, ornament and instrument.
