This was found in the heart of Notting Hill; a rare Audemars Piguet from the 1940s, with that perfect, restrained geometry, a design that speaks only because it refuses to shout.

The case, a warm, slightly rose-toned yellow gold, was mounted on a simple dark brown leather strap which suited it well; emphasising the clean lines of the rectangular case.

The cream dial, beneath the beautiful domed plexiglass exhibited a slight patina that spoke of decades of careful storage and use. If you looked closely, you could see an almost imperceptible lift of lacquer near the edges; adding a layer of character that a modern piece simply lacks.

The true distinction, however, lay within. Of the three categories of movement calibres produced by Audemars Piguet in the period, this was the rarest: the mythical tonneau shaped 9/10” RSQ movement which was only produced from 1946 to 1949 in very limited numbers before it was phased out in 1950.

Collectors today clamour for APs Valjoux 23 or VZ calibre which is a phenomenally built high precision movement but consider that it was produced over 10 years as opposed to the RSQ.
