Square, impossibly thin and unmistakably Parisian; this Boucheron Carrée in 18k white gold, was born in the late 1960s.

Then I saw it, the dial, the hand-painted “B”. Transitional. Experimental. The kind of detail you’d miss if you weren’t looking for it, the kind of detail that made collectors whisper.

Boucheron had always existed in whispers. Founded in 1858 by Frédéric Boucheron, the maison opened its doors on the Place Vendôme long before Rolex or Cartier were household names. Frédéric was obsessed with flora and fauna, weaving vines and serpents into his jewelry. His son Louis carried the house into the Art Deco era, stripping away curves in favor of cubist geometry, clean lines and symmetry.

Advertised in 1964 as the thinnest watch in the world, its case concealed a strap system unlike any other. No spring bars, no crude buckles. Instead, the strap slid into concealed tubes, locking with a hidden spring.

The Carrée in my hand was rumored to be one-of-one. Its twin in yellow gold has also been showcased, but the white gold was rarer; white metals amounting to a fraction of Boucheron’s production.
