The story begins, as many good watch stories do, in early 20th-century Switzerland.

In 1925, a visionary named Robert Cart unveiled his “Chronoscope”, a mechanism that transformed the reading of time. His invention dovetailed beautifully with the Art Deco spirit of the age; geometry, audacity and a declaration that beauty need not whisper. Time, it seemed, could now click rather than crawl.

Vacheron Constantin, master of restraint and rebellion in equal measure, revisited this idea decades later. Between 1993 and 1995, they produced one of the most enigmatic neo-vintage dress watches of the 20th century: this Jump Hour ref. 43040. Only 150 of these elusive creatures were crafted in platinum; enough to establish legend.

On the wrist, the 43040 hides its brilliance like a secret. The 36mm platinum case gleams with a quiet confidence, the stepped bezel and sharp lugs hinting at architectural lineage. Less than 8mm thick, it slips under a cuff with ease. But then the eye catches that small aperture at twelve o’clock.

The font is cursive, almost playful, spelling time not as data but as design. Each hour doesn’t pass; it arrives, punctuating the dial with polite drama. A black onyx pointer arcs smoothly around the dial’s edge, marking the minutes with elegance.

Look closer, and the dial reveals itself as a miniature universe: hand-applied guilloché radiating beneath the signature, textures playing hide-and-seek in shifting light. It’s the kind of dial that rewards obsession.

Behind the sapphire caseback hums the calibre 1120HS, born of the mythical Jaeger-LeCoultre 920, but refined by Vacheron’s own artisans into something almost lyrical. Ultra-thin, the rotor etched with Geneva stripes and edged in 21-carat gold, turns like a dancer in perfect rhythm. There’s a sense of precision, yes, but also personality.
